EWS round 3 & set up

So then, its been a few weeks since ive bothered to update the blog, this is because normally I update with my iphone but since the latest update to the app you cant upload any pictures... Annoying much?!

so anyway, on with the blog.

another 5am wake up happened ready to set off for the 2 hour drive down to Essex approx 110 miles away for round 3 of the EWS series.
I was again running in 21.5 and was looking forward to getting behind the sticks again as it had been nearly a month to the day since i last raced anything due to other commitments.

got there, set up tables with Jimmy and Carter like normal so we can have some good banter like always.

the track looked amazing as per usual, they always do a top job at EWS!

after Qualifying i ended up 2nd on the grid, loosing out on TQ by about 0.2 seconds, so it was Jimmy on pole with three 0's and me 2nd with two 0's and one 2 (2nd gets 2 points)
finals were over fast for me, getting peeled off on the first corner and getting droppped right to the back, i had to drive mega hard to get anything from the race, eventually ending up back in 4th place. the pace was definitley there for the win though.

here is the youtube link to the final

here is the set up I was running aeration shocks which at a later date I'll do a how to guide on how to make them yourself :)

till next time ciao!

EWS round 2

So then, first actual meeting with the Spec R today, as I write this, it's just gone midnight and I've been up since 5am to drive down to Essex (100 miles/2hours away) to play with toy cars.... Ugh tired much!

To give the car a gentle break in, i only ran 21.5 boosted... Yeah it's the kids class, but who's counting.

The venue, is brilliant, about 14 rolls of carpet deep, and a good 32 metres long! Plenty of room to play with. I wasn't exactly enthusiastic about the layout but it turned out to be a really good one to race on.

Competition for the class wasn't exactly "deep" but there was some good drivers in there. Mainly ex HPI challenge world champ (and I'm sure other big races ;) ) winner James Hart, aswell as my long time buddy / occasional drinking partner and Wingman... Andrew Carter.

We were all in 21.5 because of the entry for 13.5 being booked up before we entered, so decided to do this on a bit of a whim.

At EWS, they run 5 Q and 1 final. Q is based on round by round. And after 3 "ok" runs and 2 proper messy runs, I Q 5th overall, which was an under achievement for the car, but should make for an interesting final. James Hart got TQ, and Carter got 4th in Q right infront of me.
Both mine and Carter's best runs during the day were identical to 2 decimal places!

For the final, I got an OK start, feeling that if I didn't loose too much time in the opening laps, I could challenge James for the win, lap time wise we had been very close all day (0.1 diff in best laps).
I made it up to 2nd by about lap 3, but James was a good 1.5 seconds up the road from starting 4 spots higher than me, it was just a little too much for me to catch up and in the end I ended up about 2 seconds off the win, which for the very first outing with the Spec R, I couldn't be happier.

I'm pleased to say that there were no issues all day, no broken parts, it was tweaked a coupled of times but loosening the top deck got rid of that in a jiffy.

As I'm updating this on my phone, I can't upload a set up sheet until later in the week, but I'll include the important bits here....

Some specs!

Ok so I haven't blogged in a little while, well not properly at least.
I was bored this morning so I decided to get the scales out on the car. Having just recently fitted the Nosram Comet HD ESC, and a Thunder Power motor, I was wondering what the weights of the car were.

Here are the figures. Taken with pocket scales that are used to weigh gold, diamonds etc, going down to 1 decimal place.

Shell - 87.1
Front - 581.8
Rear - 645.5
Car minus shell - 1227.3

Car inc shell - 1314.4

All weight in grams. Our limit here is 1350g so as you can see it comes in well under.
The equipment used was.
Nosram Comet HD ESC
Sanwa RX
Savox low pro servo
Thunder power motor
3 fans! (1 ESC, 2 motor)
Protoform speed 6 LW shell
Sorex 32r (jb blue insert)

As usual with cars, the rear is heavier than the front, due to motor positioning. But there's plenty of space at the front if the car for the 35g of lead needed so that will bring the front weight up a little to bring the dist closer to 50/50,

Considering that the car has no weight saving items on the car, such as TI screws or turnbuckles, I'm quite impressed how light it is.
